Loneliest Road

We finally got the Expedition back.  We have been stuck in Carson City Nevada for three days due to transmission problems.  So, today we started driving to Moab Utah on US 50, which has been labeled as “The Loneliest Road In America” by Life Magazine, for the stretch through Nevada.  It is a barren, arid and desolate area that has a beauty of its own.  In about 400 miles of that stretch we only passed two real towns Austin and Eureka, both nice little towns.  The towns and the highway department have capitalized on the slogan to market the road, which is probably less lonely these days than it was when first designated.

In all we were on the road for about 13 hours but we had a lot of catching up to do.   Along the way we were able to check out Great Basin National Park, which we didn’t know even existed until a week ago.  It was very nice and we plan to come back some day to do some of their hikes.

Wow! 7200 miles! That’s a lot of rambling! When Buzz Aldrin landed on the moon, he described it as “magnificent desolation”. Seems as though he could have been describing this segment of Highway 50. Love the sunlight streaming through the clouds and the pictures of rain falling in the distance. By the way, a friend and co-worker is going to Oregon next summer, and thanks to your blog, she’s going to go a bit out of her way to see Crater Lake. She’s actually planning to stay at the lodge there! Nice job blogging!
