After our night of backpacking we had a long drive over to Jackson Hole to meet Mom in a couple days. We decided to take the scenic route so we could see more of the Black Hills and so we could also enter Jackson Hole via Yellowstone. That allowed us to drive over the Beartooth Highway which is one of the most beautiful drives in the US.
Devil's Tower National Monument
Leaving the Black Hills we drove through Deadwood (since Dad has been watching the series on HBO), and then on to Devil’s Tower which many people may remember seeing in the Close Encounters movie. They wouldn’t let us take the travel trailer to the base of the tower so we had to disconnect it and leave it at the bottom before we drove up. The tower is really big and very cool. It rises up in an area that has small rolling hills so it really stands out. The best part is that it has a large boulder field at the bottom that you can climb up without having to have an official climbing permit.
Bighorn Mountains
After leaving Devils Tower and traveling further into Wyoming we went through the Bighorn Mountains. We didn’t take a lot of pictures and the ones below don’t do them justice but the drive through them on Scenic Highway 14 is very beautiful. Descending out of them was also the only time on the trip where the brakes started to give out and we had to pull over and let them cool. We ended the day in Red Lodge Montana with the Beartooth Highway ahead of us the next day.
